What you need to have before crossing:

  • Vehicle registration papers
  • Letter of authority from the registered owner if the vehicle is not owned by the driver
  • International license
  • White and Red Reflective Tape: Two small white rectangular size strips on the right and left hand side of the front bumper as well as two small red square strips on the right and left hand side of the rear bumper
  • 2 Warning Triangles
  • 1 Fire Extinguisher
  • 2 Safety Vests
  • Sticker of the car registration country

What you will need to get and pay at the border:

1- Carbon Tax: USD 11 to 15, based on engine’s capacity
2- Third-Party Insurance: USD 30 for a rented car, valid 1 month
3- Road Access Fee: USD 10 for light vehicles, paid on entry only
4- Commercial Vehicle Guarantee (CVG): USD 50, valid 1 month
Rented cars are considering as commercial vehicles. CVG is obtainable from Zimbabwe registered clearing agents.

From Botswana to Zambia

Decline any help and always keep all your documents with you. You will need USD and Kwachas (ZMW) for paying visas and taxes.

  • Ferry ticket for the car: ZMW 150 on the Zambia Boat, or BWP 80 (Botswana Reg.) / BWP 200 on the Botswana Boat
  • CIP (Customs Importation Permit): No cost
  • Carbon Tax: ZMW 150 to 275, based on engine’s capacity
  • Third-Party Insurance: ZMW 300 (negotiable) for 1 month / ZMW 560 (negotiable) for 1 year
  • Road Toll: USD 10 to 48, based on the vehicle registration country (Botswana is USD 48, South Africa is USD 20)
  • Kazungula Council Vehicle Levy: ZMW 30 one way, ZMW 60 round trip

Zambia border can be tricky to cross. Expect 1H30 to 2H to complete the whole process.
