Vehicle maintenance
We select vehicles that are regularly inspected and serviced before each rental: checking levels, tyre condition and pressure, tightening components, checking the general condition of belts and brakes.
During the rental period, the vehicles will be subjected to heavy use, shocks and vibrations. It is the customer’s responsibility to carry out regular checks to ensure that they are driving in good condition:
Security equipment included in your 4×4 rental
All vehicles are equipped with 2 safety triangles, 2 safety waistcoats, a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit, in addition to the breakdown equipment required for any self-drive safari in Southern Africa.
We provide a complete list of equipment with our commercial proposals. It varies from one rental company to another.
Satellite Phone
Botswana does not have cellular coverage throughout its territory, particularly in national parks and reserves.
In the event of an emergency, it is necessary to use a satellite phone to contact the emergency services or assistance. That’s why we offer a range of Inmarsat and Iridium satellite phones for hire. We always include this device when you rent a 4×4 for your self-drive safari, especially in Botswana and the most remote areas of southern Africa.
Emergency medical assistance
Okavango Air Rescue is a helicopter assistance service for medical emergencies in hard-to-reach areas of Botswana. With a simple call by satellite phone, Okavango Air Rescue provides a medical helicopter and transports the injured person to the nearest appropriate medical service.
Tawana Self Drive is a member of the Okavango Air Rescue programme and subscribes its customers to the service on request as part of their 4×4 rental.
Membership is by name, valid for 1 year, and entitles you to 1 free daytime intervention. During your trip, you can contact Okavango Air Rescue with your mobile or satellite phone. For detailed conditions, visit the official website or contact us.
