The anticipation is building. What still needs to be done? What should we pack? What awaits us in Africa? So many questions swirling in our minds as first-time travellers to this incredible continent.

At last, departure day has arrived. From Zurich we fly to Johannesburg and then on to Windhoek, where we familiarise ourselves with our vehicle for the next three weeks.

The next day, the adventure truly begins. Thankfully, we are travelling with two seasoned Africa experts, which makes everything so much easier.
Our first night in the car, at a stunningly remote spot all to ourselves, was magical – the starry sky, the sounds of the night, the vastness of it all – things that would accompany us throughout the journey.

Before long, we also discovered the meaning of an “African Massage” ;-). At times, it felt like being inside a cocktail shaker! Yet the breathtaking landscapes, the countless wildlife encounters, cooking under the open sky, and the sheer wonder of so many new impressions quickly made us forget the bumpy roads.

We never imagined that seeing animals in the wild would leave such unforgettable impressions. Not only the first elephant, the first giraffe, the first zebra – all of which were absolutely spectacular – but even the tenth or twentieth had us reaching for our phones or cameras. So many wow moments – almost unbelievable! The diversity of wildlife left us in awe every single day. We had the privilege of observing an incredible variety of animals, marvelling at each one. Time and again, a different bird or a new species of antelope surprised us.

Witnessing our first lions in the wild, up close – what an overwhelming sense of awe that was. We were even lucky enough to spot four cheetahs and a leopard.

The variety of this trip – the driving, numerous national parks, game drives, boat tours, ever-changing landscapes and wildlife, Victoria Falls, and the most wonderful campsites – was simply fantastic and has given us memories to last a lifetime.
