We had 3 weeks’ vacation in May/June 2021…

Well, with the Covid, it wasn’t a given… We racked our brains in front of the world map… And then we discovered a lovely country still open to tourists: Botswana!

After a little research (and a lot of convincing to convince Marie), the destination was confirmed, and this summer would be one of adventure!

First time in Africa, first safari. Completely seduced by the idea of a self-drive safari, we talk to Julie and Vincent from Tawana Self Drive, who put together a dream program for us (while being super-available and efficient with the various covid tests and other complications).

Julie and Vincent put together the itinerary, booked a few activities and, above all, the vehicle and accommodation, and provided us with all the ingredients for an extraordinary trip.

The journey begins: Lille -> Brussels -> Frankfurt -> Windhoek and finally Botswana!

Let’s put it simply: everything was PERFECT!

We started with a great helicopter ride to Maun, to discover the magic of the Okavango Delta, particularly humid for the time of year.

Then the safari really began, heading for Moremi, where the density of animals on the road was mind-boggling. Moremi was largely flooded, so we were able to use our electric winch, much to Lucas’s delight.

Then it’s off to Savuti, to meet the majestic lions, followed by Chobe River Front and its multitude of elephants, which we were able to admire both from the riverbank in our 4×4, and by boat on the river as close to them as possible.

We found ourselves alone on Kubu Island in the middle of the salt desert, contemplating the baobabs – one of the rare advantages of traveling in times of global pandemic.

Then came the big blow for both of us: the Central Kalahari and the incredible sensation of being alone in the world, meeting no one for over 72 hours. Just the animals, nature and us, an unforgettable enchanted interlude.

Marie was lucky enough to meet her favourite animal during these days: the Caracal, while Lucas was “forced” to return to complete his quest for the leopard…

Of course, we also fell in love with the starry nights like nowhere else, the blazing sunsets, the 4×4 that has become our home, the elephants that cross the highway without looking, the owls that protect the campsite, the sounds of the hippos that lull us at night, and all this superb animal life that flourishes without barriers or fences.

In short, we’ll be back next year, always with Tawana of course!

PS: Julie and Vincent, we’re bringing the beer 😉 -> Yes! we’re waiting for you! 😉
