I have been traveling for ten years in many desert areas, as a solo self-driver.
After trying to visit Botswana in May 2020, I had to postpone the project until May 2021. Usually, I prepare my trips on my own, and I pick my destination where wild camping is possible. Botswana does not allow it inside its national parks so I decided to call on Julie and Vincent, from Tawana Self Drive, to take advantage of their extraordinary experience of the country.
I asked Julie to give first priority to the most remote campsites, without any premises, so that I can feel the magic to be on my own in the very wild Southern Africa. And I really wasn’t disappointed. Without Tawana’s assistance, I would have made some bad choices and couldn’t have experienced this deep wilderness as much as I wanted. Even if each place has been amazing, the Central Kalahari leaves me the most beautiful memories, offering an authentic experience, in which the nature is intact, imposing its rules and its rhythm.
There, your days are more than simple : get up very early to enjoy the abundant wildlife, highlighted by cinematic sunrises. Take advantage of the lunch break to have a good meal and prepare your campsite. Go on a safari at sunset, find a discreet place to observe the nature making its show. Go back to camp before dark, so as not to serve as a meal for predators! Fall asleep to the magical and unique sounds of the Kalahari.
Thank you to Julie and Vincent for allowing me to have such wonderful moments!
