We’d traveled all over the world many times, but we’d never been on a self-drive safari before. This was our first time in Southern Africa, and our experience driving 4x4s was limited to the gravel roads of Australia and Iceland. So it was with a touch of apprehension that we set out to plan this month-long trip through Namibia and Botswana, guided by Tawana’s advice and suggestions.

We chose to start in Windhoek and take a loop through Namibia, passing through Sesriem, Swapkommund, the Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Etosha, and Caprivi before heading to Botswana.

And like everyone else, we reveled in the vastness of the landscapes and the diversity of wildlife encounters we encountered along the way.

This trip was a success thanks to several reasons:

  • Meticulous preparation (thanks, Isabelle… and Julie) and the wise decision to start our journey in Namibia before tackling Botswana’s challenging trails with the confidence of experienced self-drivers 😊
  • The ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances: a heavy rainy season prevented us from visiting the Okavango Delta, but we were able to change our plans to explore the Makgadikgadi and the beautiful banks of the Boteti River (thanks, Vincent!)
  • And the peace of mind of knowing the Tawana team was with us no matter what! (Thanks to the whole team)

So don’t hesitate any longer—set out on your own adventure to discover Southern Africa with Tawana, of course. You won’t regret it.

As for us, maybe we’ll come back to make up for our missed encounters with Moremi and the leopards we weren’t able to spot 😊
